My dad, Charles Glenn Lee ("Chucky" to some friends and former co-workers) was an enigma. He could be stern, gruff and a harsh taskmaster, but could also be the kindest, most caring and empathetic man you'd ever meet. He grew up on a farm during the Great Depression, one of eight siblings born to parents of very modest means. He quit school his freshman year to help make ends meet at home, following a car accident which left his father with a broken back. He found employment at Hanna/Consol Coal, first as a truck driver, later as a bull dozer operator and cable man and, finally, as an operator of the company's huge earth moving shovel known as the 550. He was extremely proud of that accomplishment, and had an outstanding work ethic throughout his life. It was rare for him to miss a day of work due to illness, as he never wanted to let his buddies down.
My dad had the highest possible regard for his father-in-law and mother- in-law, Clyde and Freda Bailey, often remarking that Clyde was the best man he'd ever known. He and his brother-in-law, Don Bailey, spent many hours over the years working with Clyde at his radiator shop and garage, where he gained a sense of pride for his cars and pick-up trucks. Dad often shared fond memories of those times with us, and was always appreciative that Clyde helped him become a member of the Hazen Masonic Lodge.
My dad was a good provider for our mom and we five kids. Though we weren't well-to-do by any means, we always had food on the table, a warm house and clothes on our backs. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Dad was a proud member of what's been called "the greatest generation". They worked hard, served their country, raised their families, lived their own versions of "the American dream", and did the best they could. Rest in peace, Dad.
