Obituary of Hilles Glenn Kemp

HILLES KEMP

Hilles Glenn Kemp, 91, of Belmont, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his sleep, at his home, in his favorite chair on September 17, 2017 and is now present with the Lord.

He was born in the original family home, near the railroad in Belmont, Ohio, was a child during the depression helping his mom in the garden for the family food, and took pilot lessons as a teen. He was an elder of Mount Zion Church in Belmont and the American Legion Post #312. He was an honorary member of Belmont United Methodist Church, where he spent many decades of community service and was a former Sunday School Superintendent. He was a Gideon and former Boy Scout volunteer, who was best known as “Mr. Kemp, the teacher”, while he was employed for 11 years at Belmont, when it was a high school. He taught in the fields of chemistry, drafting, wood shop, and driver’s education. He was also employed by Union Local for 26 years as an Industrial Arts teacher, for a total of 37 years in education and also worked two nights a week for approximately 50 years, as a part time Ohio University instructor. He was a member of Belmont County Board of Education for several years and taught children at Belmont College in the summer Excelsior program.

He was in the Navy during World War II 7th Fleet, where he received much training in electronics and worked on 54 different ships, earning his teaching degree from Ohio State University. Hilles, his brothers, and the Loy family carried wood and built his parents’ home in 1946. He also built homes for his children, repaired several of the Epworth cottages, and was instrumental in restoring Mount Zion Church. Hilles was a loyal husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and will be missed by many, including special neighbors, and his dog, Skipper.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford L. and Hazel Mozella Moore Kemp; brothers, Starling (Faye) and Wayne; and an infant sister.

Hilles is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rosalene Marie Bovenizer Kemp; son, H. Gregory (Ann); and daughter, Rosemarie E, Kemp Mehl (Bruce); ten grandchildren, Julianna Hise (Rocky), G. Elijah (Dana), Jeremiah, Hillery (Jeff) Lucas, Isaiah, Olivia (Aaron) Bolt, Michaela (Anthony) Paree, Hosanna, Micahlene Mehl (John) Williams, and Veronica; 11 great-grandchildren, Ben, Ella, Gideon, and Makenna Hise, Noah, Levi, and Caleb Lucas, Bonnie and Lucille Kemp, Axel Douglas Paree and Evan James Williams.

Family and friends are welcome to visit, Thursday from 2-6 p.m., Patron Funeral Homes & Crematory Kelly Kemp Braido, 322 North Main Street, Bethesda and Friday from noon until the time of service, beginning at 1 p.m., Mount Zion Church, Pleasant Ridge Road, Route 86, Belmont. Pastor Barry Peters officiating. Burial will follow in Belmont Cemetery, Belmont.
