Sandy, John and I express to you and your family our most heartfelt sympathy at this time of sorrow. We attended Joe's funeral mass and it was so beautiful as Father spoke so highly of him. But Joe was so well liked by everyone. You and he would always stop to say a few words to John and me at St. Mary's Saturday masses. May God keep you in his healing hands and guide you during this most difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Sincerely, Diana & John Frollini

I'm so sad to learn of Joe's passing. He and Sandy are in a lot of my earliest memories. As a child, I was always excited to go to my brother's sports games, because I could always count on them to be there. Joe always had a smile and a piece of Big Red gum for me in his front pocket! They would let me sit with them and play. As I grew, while I didn't think about them being at games as often, since their son and my brother had graduated, I was always just as excited to see them, and there was that piece of Big Red gum. For me , as an adult, it feels like the ending of an era. I could always count on seeing Joe and Sandy at the Union Local games when I was visiting, with the same smiles and always carrying some Big Red. I send Sandy, Wade and the rest of the family my sincerest condolences, and prayers. And Joe, next time I see you, I'll bring the Big Red!

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all of the Smolira family regarding Joe's passing. I was friends with Joe and Sandy through Sandy's brother, Gary Belyk, and all three of Joe's sons (Joe, Kurt and Wade) played ball for me at Union Local. Big Joe was quite a hard-nosed running back for the Jets in the early sixties and passed his love of sports on to his sons and grandchildren. Joe was a very loving father and grandfather and a devout Christian. Rest in peace!

Sandy, Joey, Kurt & Wade,
My absolutely sincere condolences to you. I had the pleasure of being your neighbor and babysitter for the boys. Your place next door was my safe place when growing up. I never remember a time when Joe wasn't smiling. What a genuine and kind man. We are the lucky ones to have the privilege of being in your life. My heart is breaking for the family. I love all of you.

Sandy and the entire Smolira family, I share your grief. I have fond memories of all of you and would like to touch briefly on a couple memories of Joe. He was someone I will always look up to, literally. I struggled to climb hills twice in my life, many, many years apart and twice I found Joe and Sandy at the top of them. I've shared this story in detail several times and Sandy, when you were there looking for eagles and found me, I knew you were just as surprised as I was. My deepest condolences and love to the Smolira family. With every Eagle I see, I will think of you Joe.....32.

Sandy and the rest of Joe's family have our deepest condolences. Such a wonderful man, he made a point to come and see me (as a matter of fact this week 15 years ago) when Rilie was at WVU. He made a horrible time a great deal better. I so appreciated his company. Joe is proof of how a little kindness can mean the world to someone. Thoughts and prayers are with you all.
