DORRANCE EDGAR BARKELOO

Dorrance Edgar “Ed” Barkeloo, 88, of Barnesville, Ohio, died Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Astoria Place of Barnesville.  He was born March 5, 1929 in Delaware, Ohio to the late Alvin Dwight Barkeloo and Mary Alice Bush Barkeloo Farmer.

Ed attended St. Mary Catholic School in Delaware, Ohio, graduating early so that he could enlist in the Army Air Force in 1946 at age 17.  He was stationed at Lackland Army Air Field, the training center for the Army Air Force, but traveled throughout the U.S. as he served in the Traveling Aviation Cadet Examining Unit. Following his military service, Ed resumed his education at the Ohio State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Law, and Juris Doctor Degree in June 1954.  After a short stint in private practice in Sydney, Ohio, Ed joined the Columbus City Attorney's staff in 1957, where he served until 1986 in a variety of roles, including Chief Counsel and Assistant City Attorney.

Ed enjoyed 31 years of retirement, splitting his time between Cape Coral, FL, and Barnesville, OH. He was an accomplished marksman and founding member of the Southwest Florida Sportsman's Association. He loved spending time in nature, on family camping trips, hunting trips, and touring our national parks. He also had a special love for the many cats and dogs whom he befriended over the years.

He married Mary Ellen Jefferis Barkeloo on September 23, 1961. After 53 years of marriage, she preceded him in death in 2015.  He is survived by their daughters, Brenda Barkeloo and Sharon Barkeloo, both of Barnesville, OH, and Patricia (Mark) Millen of Ellicott City, MD; two grandchildren, Matthew and Katherine Millen; and many nieces and nephews.

Ed's parents and two brothers, Robert Dwight (Wilma) Barkeloo and Alvin David (Linda) Barkeloo, also preceded him in death.

Main Street, Barnesville, OH.  Father Dave Cornett presiding.  Interment will follow at Assumption Catholic Cemetery, Barnesville, OH.
